Industrial Injection Molding Machine Buying Checklist for Small Manufacturers

Evaluate capacity, molds, materials, utilities, safety, service and landed cost before buying an injection-molding machine.

An injection-molding machine must match the part, mold, material and production target. Choosing on price alone can produce poor fit, excessive energy use or tooling that cannot run on the machine.

Define the part first

Prepare finished-part dimensions, target weight, resin, tolerances and monthly quantity. These determine clamping force, shot size and screw configuration.

Match the mold

Confirm mold width and height, opening stroke, tie-bar spacing, ejector stroke and nozzle dimensions. Ask the supplier to approve the mold drawing in writing.

Verify material compatibility

Different plastics require different temperatures, screws and drying. Provide the exact resin grade and additives.

Check utilities

Record voltage, phase, frequency, load, compressed-air needs, cooling-water requirements and expected energy use. Installation may require electrical and cooling upgrades.

Ask for realistic output

Cycle time depends on mold, material, cooling and automation. Request a trial using a comparable part and allow for setup, scrap and changeovers.

Review safety and documentation

Confirm guards, emergency stops, interlocks and applicable certification. Request manuals, electrical diagrams, maintenance schedules and a spare-parts list.

Plan installation and training

Clarify unloading, positioning, commissioning and operator training. Determine whether support is remote or on-site and how warranty service works in your country.

Calculate total landed cost

Include machine, mold, auxiliaries, freight, insurance, duties, taxes, installation, power upgrades, training and initial materials.

Get a formal quotation

The quotation should state specifications, accessories, lead time, Incoterms, payment milestones, warranty and after-sales support. A marketplace headline price is not a final quotation.
